Passage Picker- Because of Winn Dixie

1. Pg. 96 Paragraph: 8
First 2 words: But in Last 2 words: doing now

This passage is a fact/opinion type of passage because this statement is how Gloria Dump feels you should treat people and she tries to teach Opal not to judge someone by their past because people change and grow every day and most of the time for the better.

Why is it important not to judge people too quickly?
It is important not to judge people to quickly or by their past because everyone has their hidden secretes and wrong doings and you can miss out on meeting and getting to know someone who may be the one person you needed to hear from in the first place. People grow and change for the better and everyone makes mistakes that should be forgiven and not held above their head forever.

Why did the author include this passage in the story?
I feel the author included this passage to teach readers an important lesson about always giving people a second change and not to judge a book by its cover.

2. Pg. 26 Paragraph: 2
First 2 words: She could Last 2 words: a car

This passage is a figurate type of passage because it uses a metaphor to describe how Opal’s mother had a green thumb.

Why did the author use this type of passage in her novel?
The author used this type of figurate passage in her novel to help paint a picture of what she is trying to convey to the reader. These type of passages often bring about many different emotions as well.

3. Pg. 62 Paragraph: 8
First 2 words: I stood Last 2 words: the yard

This passage is an important type of passage because it speaks of Opal overcoming her fear to protect someone she loves dearly; Winn Dixie.

What can you learn from Opal? Is fear worth missing out on things, like meeting a new friend?
Fear is something that should not hold people back because you can miss out on incredible opportunities liking forming friendship. Opal decided her fear of the witch was not worth loosing someone she loved, so she shut out her fear and was brave.

Why did the author include this passage in the story?
I feel the author included this passage to teach her readers that fear is just an obstacle that can be overcome if you are brave. Everyone has fear, but those who overcome that fear open their hearts to new opportunities.

4. Pg. 134 Paragraph: 5
First 2 words: Do you Last 2 words: aching heart
This passage is a figurate type passage because it uses a metaphor to describe how everyone in the world has something they miss or something that aches their heart.

When you first read the passage what did you think Gloria’s point was? Was she thinking out-loud or trying to teach Opal another life lesson?
I feel that Gloria was thinking out-loud and when asked if everyone has someone to miss, Gloria was consumed with the thoughts of her own life stories and those she has heard and sympathized with and that is why she said, “I believe the whole world has an aching heart.”

Why did the author include this in the story?
The author included this passage because it is important to keep in mind that you are not the only one in the world who has problems or has lost someone, that there is probably someone standing right next to you that have it a lot worse than you do.

Catching Fire Found Poem

Forever Kind of Love

I do think your mad and I’ll still go with you.

He tilts his forehead

pulls me closer.

 His skin,

His warmth,

 I close my eyes.

I breathe in the smell of snow-dampened leather,

 smoke and apples.

His voice drops to a whisper.

“I love you.” That’s why.”

Gale is mine.

I am his.

 Anything else is unthinkable.

Poetry

The acrostic structure combined with teacher modeling provides a scaffold for students, showing them how to think flexibly and develop ideas and interesting word choices. Teaching students to write acrostic poetry may provide the appropriate instructional scaffold to enhance, transform, and bring ownership to their understanding of the content.
As we teach students how to write acrostic poems, we must keep in mind that showing is more important than telling and that modeling produces better writing than directing. It is important to note that we can use this framework with other poetic forms as well. Teachers should give students choices, let them discuss other classmates work and put their two sense into each poem they read. Let the students get a visual and mental feel of the poetic forms and let them see that they can use poetry to benefit their own work such as learning about science. Poems are also a great mode for studying and help with memorization because it can be fun!
I feel it is extremely important for teachers to model and show examples of poetry instead of just saying here is what you need to do, do it, because the students will not develop the love for poetry, instead they will resent it because it doesn’t make any sense to them and that is a shame.

Love That Dog

  • Jack’s attitudes about poetry from the beginning of the book to the end.
  • Mrs. Stretchberry’s instruction—how did she approach teaching poetry?
  1. Jack’s attitude at the beginning of the book was very reluctant. Jack did not understand poetry nor did he know how to write a story and make it look like a real poem. Jack wanted his poems to be right and worthy of being put on the teacher’s board but he had very little confidence about his work. However, towards the ending of the book Jack realized that he had a love for poetry and really wanted to meet his favorite poet. Jack used his real life stories and turned them into poems that were really good, not only did this give him a world of self-confidence but he also gained a love for learning about poetry.
  2. Mrs. Stretchberry taught her students poetry by letting them read different poems and writing in their journals each time about what they thought about the poem and let them make their own poem. It appeared that she made her students write in their journal, no matter what they had to say. She also helped boost their confidence about their work by putting it up on the teacher’s board and letting the students give her instructions on how they want it to look.

The Hunger Games: First 3 Chapters Response

District 12 (Seam) is apart of the Appalachia that is very poor, dirty, brokendown and full of people who have lost hope. It is very sad, depressing and a place where many people want to leave and run away from, but they know it is impossible to do so. The place reaks of soot from the coal mines and everything is covered with a thick layer of film within hours. Many people starve to death because the lack of food and resources and the district leaves no hope for a brighter future.

  • Page 4: “…many who have long stopped trying to scrub the coal dust out of their broken nails, the lines of their sunken faces.”
  • Page 4: “But since we’re lucky to get two or three hours of electricity in the evenings, it’s usually safe to touch.”
  • Page 6: “District Twelve. Where you can starve to death in safety.”
  • Page 13: “You can opt to add your name more times in exchange for tesserae.”
  • Page 28: “Starvation’s not an uncommon fate in District 12.”
  • Page 28: “Starvation is never the cause of death officially. It’s always the flu, or exposure, or pneumonia. But that fools no one.”
  • Page 41: “Besides basic reading and math most of our instruction is coal related.”
  • Page: 42: “We don’t have hot water at home, unless we boil it.”

Katniss is a strong, prideful and hardworking individual. She strives to take care of her family, yet she is full of anger and bitterness. She does not easily forgive and it takes a lot for her to open up to someone, if she even does then. She is a loner type that is okay with not having anything of her own as long as her little sister is provided and cared for. She is stubborn and not easily moved emotionally or physically. She feels that she has to be the bigger, stronger person no matter the situation, becasue she is the provider.

  • Page 2: ” Entrails. No hissing. This is the closest we will ever come to love.”
  • Page 9: “Leave the district. Run off. Live in the woods. You and I, We could make it.”
  • Page 9: ” Leave? How could I leave Prim, who is the only person in the world I’m certain I love?”
  • Page 15: “I protect Prim in every way I can.”
  • Page 22: “I volunteer as tribute!”
  • Page 23: “When they televise the replay of the reapings tonight, everyone will make note of my tears, and i’ll be marked as an easy target.”
  • Page 26: “Family devotion only goes so far for most people on reaping day. What I did was the radical thing.”
  • Page 27: “At eleven years old, with Prim just seven, I took over as head of the family.”
  • Page 34: “Crying is not an option.”
  • Page 35: “In it is all anger, all the fear I felt at her abandonment.”
  • Page  36: “It isn’t in my nature to go down without a fight, even when things seem insurmountable.”

Response to Mrs. Cassidy’s Blog

I found Mrs. Cassidy’s blog to be such a creative and really smart idea. I would love to have a similar blog for my classroom one day because I feel like it would push my students to work to the best of their abilities and also show them how much I care about their learning and value their work by posting it on the web for the world to see. I feel like this blog is a great motivator for the students as well as the teacher, because the teacher is pushed to find creative ideas for her classroom and is also pushed to get her students’ family involved. With this blog every parent can see what his or her child is learning and can participate in the classroom one hundred percent of the time. My favorite activity I seen on Mrs. Cassidy’s blog would have to be the flashlight reading day! It was such a cute idea and it gave the students a chance to relax on a snowy day!

Welcome to my Blog!

This blog belongs to Caitlin Lackey. I created this blog to go along with the RE 3240 World Literature for Children class I am taking at Appalachian State University. I am taking this class because I want to be a elementary teacher and I hope that this class and blog will help me not only get familiar with the different generes of literature, but will also help me teach my students in the future and build a great library for my classroom!
