The Hunger Games: First 3 Chapters Response

District 12 (Seam) is apart of the Appalachia that is very poor, dirty, brokendown and full of people who have lost hope. It is very sad, depressing and a place where many people want to leave and run away from, but they know it is impossible to do so. The place reaks of soot from the coal mines and everything is covered with a thick layer of film within hours. Many people starve to death because the lack of food and resources and the district leaves no hope for a brighter future.

  • Page 4: “…many who have long stopped trying to scrub the coal dust out of their broken nails, the lines of their sunken faces.”
  • Page 4: “But since we’re lucky to get two or three hours of electricity in the evenings, it’s usually safe to touch.”
  • Page 6: “District Twelve. Where you can starve to death in safety.”
  • Page 13: “You can opt to add your name more times in exchange for tesserae.”
  • Page 28: “Starvation’s not an uncommon fate in District 12.”
  • Page 28: “Starvation is never the cause of death officially. It’s always the flu, or exposure, or pneumonia. But that fools no one.”

  • Page: 42: “We don’t have hot water at home, unless we boil it.”

Katniss is a strong, prideful and hardworking individual. She strives to take care of her family, yet she is full of anger and bitterness. She does not easily forgive and it takes a lot for her to open up to someone, if she even does then. She is a loner type that is okay with not having anything of her own as long as her little sister is provided and cared for. She is stubborn and not easily moved emotionally or physically. She feels that she has to be the bigger, stronger person no matter the situation, becasue she is the provider.
